A significant part of the Charities Act (Northern Ireland) 2008 has been brought into operation giving the Charity Commission Northern Ireland powers to regulate charities. This includes regulatory, investigatory and enforcement powers including the power of the Commission to institute enquiries into charities, to authorise dealings with charity property, to authorise ex gratia payments, to give advice and guidance, to deal with remuneration of trustees providing services to the charity and trustee indemnity insurance.  It also brings into operation for the purpose of making regulations only, provisions relating to annual statements of accounts, annual audit or examination of charity accounts, annual reports and annual returns amongst others.

If you would like to discuss any of this please contact Jenny Ebbage the head of our Charities Unit.
