Charities Act (Northern Ireland) 2008

The Charities (Northern Ireland) Act 2008 received Royal Assent on 9 September and is now available online.

This Act will bring a significant change to the sector in Northern Ireland.

The Act is not yet in force however, we understand that full implementation of the Act will take place gradually.

Anticipated Timetable:

April 2009: Charity Commissioners to be appointed by the Minister

April 2009: Charity Commission for Northern Ireland to be established

May 2009: consultation on public benefit

April 2010: first registrations of charities

April 2011: reporting requirements
